Three big SEO stories from March 2022 all businesses should read
There were a few interesting updates from Google during March, including a new algorithm update for Product Reviews and a useful new feature in AdSense. There was also a huge expansion in the reels market as Meta continue making their move on TikTok.
Here’s what’s been happening in the world of SEO, Ads and social media over the last month.
Google Updates Algorithm for Product Reviews
March saw Google launch their third product review algorithm update in search results. The previous updates launched last year, with the first designed to reward content with first-hand research which was supplemented by the second product review update in December.
The latest product review algorithm update is aimed toward increasing higher quality product reviews in search results. A Google spokesperson said: “Today, we’re launching another update that builds on that work to enhance our ability to identify high quality product reviews. This will make it easier for us to get sound purchasing advice in front of users, and to reward creators who are earnest in being helpful.”
Google added that the update will require a few weeks to fully roll out, and will mostly impact the rankings of English-language product reviews.
In addition, another update to Google Data Studio now allows users to import more insights from Search Console. The update allows users to visualise traffic from more Google sources to create a more accurate picture of the their user activity.
AdSense Receives New Related Search Feature
Google also announced a new feature for AdSense called Related Search for Content. The new feature serves as a contextual navigation area showing you additional search terms related to the content being viewed on a website. When you click on a search term, you go to a special search results page for that publisher’s website. The search results shown on the page will feature other relevant topics and search ads.
The benefits of the new feature should include increased site engagement, more relevant search ads and an incremental increase in revenue. It should also provide a better experience for users.
Facebook Reels Expanded to More Countries
Meta announced in March that the Facebook Reels feature is expanding to include more countries. In an effort to compete with TikTok, Facebook Reels will now be available in 150 more countries.
The expansion should provide users with more ways to connect with audiences and monetise their content.
The expansion also includes some new editing features such as a remix option that lets users create a new reel alongside a previously publicly-shared reel. Reels can also run as long as 60 seconds now, plus users can create drafts and use video clipping to test a variety of formats for live and long form content.
